Output to fig format

I am thinking about writing an idl script to directly write things to xifg
format without involving a spawn command to pstoedit (this is under linux/unix). 
Before I set off on this big waste of time I was wondering if anyone
else had already done it....

please let me know.  If I get no responce I will go ahead and start
